Samuel Hershey Schmeling is the office favorite who brings a lively and playful personality to the office. When he’s not looking for pets or a playmate, Sam can be found snoozing underneath somebody’s desk. Although his design skills are still in progress, Sam’s presence around the office is always appreciated.
Founder, Lead Architect and Contractor
Dan Schmeling is the founder and president of Carbon Architects. He loves the design process and says there’s no better feeling than finishing a project and looking back at how things changed throughout the process. His passion for architecture combined with his masterful designs always leaves clients satisfied because he saves them both time and money. Although he’s originally from Lincoln, Nebraska, he considers himself an “Ogdenite.” He moved to Ogden after receiving a bachelor’s degree in Architectural Studies from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1993. A few years later, Dan earned a Masters of Architecture degree from the University of Utah, furthering his design expertise. Outside the office, Dan, who is also the office’s head dog waterer, enjoys spending time with his family, practicing his faith and enjoying the outdoors. On the weekends, you can catch him fishing, hunting, hiking or biking in the Ogden area.
Head Design Drafter
Jacob Sommer, who’s been our head design drafter for five years, is passionate about green building and space planning, which perfectly fits his role at Carbon Architects where he takes immense pride assuring the needs of our clients. His diligence can be attributed to Louis Kahn, a famous architect, who influenced Jake’s work by once stating, “Architecture is the thoughtful making of space.” Jacob, who is from Utah’s Wasatch Front, is a Weber State University graduate who studied architecture, interior design and construction management. Outside the office, Jacob enjoys reading, painting, playing the piano and spending time with family and friends.
Candace Ross’s interior design expertise and rigorous determination never fail to leave our clients thrilled. Candace, our interior designer since 2015, always succeeds in creating the best possible design for each project. She’s a South Weber, Utah native who graduated from Weber State University with a bachelor’s degree in interior design technology and technical sales. When Candace isn’t designing the next beautiful space, she is spending time with her husband and baby boy. In her free time, she might be found mountain biking or playing volleyball.
Jagger Udy’s thoughtful approach helps him generate unique projects as one of our design drafters. Since joining the team in 2016, Jagger has helped us scale significantly this past year. As an Ogden, Utah resident, Jagger graduated from Fremont High school and is currently enrolled at Weber State University where he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Integrated Studies. Much like his designs, Jagger’s life is clearly thought out as he plans on getting a master’s degree in Architecture upon his WSU graduation. In his free time, Jagger is either playing poker with his buddies or watching reality television shows like Survivor.
Lib Schmeling’s can-do attitude has helped the office since she took an official role as a design assistant in early 2017. Because she’s Dan’s daughter, Lib has been running around since day one, which has helped her form unique opinions on interior and exterior designs. She enjoys being a part of the design and building processes, as she loves leaving clients satisfied with our innovative designs. Born and raised in Ogden, Utah, Lib is a Saint Joseph Catholic High School graduate and is currently attending the University of Utah. When she’s not running around the office, Lib is either reading books, hanging with the office dog or enjoying the outdoors.
Andrew Vollert brings a creative and social approach to our team as the director of marketing. Since joining us in 2017, he has embraced the challenge of improving our marketing efforts and updating our website. He is also a standout on the WSU Wildcat football team, where he earned 2016 AP All-American honors as a tight end. When he’s not in the office or on the football field, Andrew is usually playing games with his buds or watching his favorite shows on Netflix.
